Among the local celebrations, the most notable takes place at the end of December and is called the Dance of the Child (El Baile del Niño), that since 1816, is celebrated each Christmas in the parochial church of La Matanza . It is a Christmas “tajaraste”, played with drums, flute, tambourine and triangle, and is danced in two rows among which the dancers play a pair of castanets.
The Festivities of San Salvador, in the church of the same name, are celebrated on August 6 th, and on May 31 st, the events that gave the town its name are evoked. The carnival has a well deserved fame.
